In a heartwarming tribute to baseball history, the Florida Marlins are set to immortalize two of their most iconic players in the 2026 Marlins Legends Hall of Fame. Josh Beckett and Dontrelle Willis, both integral parts of the Marlins' 2003 World Series victory, will be honored for their remarkable contributions to the team and the South Florida community. This announcement, made at FanFest on Saturday night, marks a significant moment in the Marlins' legacy.
The Marlins Legends Hall of Fame, established to recognize former players, coaches, managers, and staff who have left a lasting impact, previously inducted Jeff Conine, Luis Castillo, Jim Leyland, and Jack McKeon into its inaugural class in 2025. Josh Beckett, drafted second overall in the 1999 MLB Draft, emerged as a pivotal figure in the Marlins' success. Despite battling blisters throughout his early career, Beckett found his stride in 2003, showcasing his talent with a 9-8 record and a 3.04 ERA in 24 games. However, it was his postseason performances that truly solidified his hero status.
In the 2003 World Series, Beckett demonstrated his resilience and skill, pitching on three days' rest in Game 6 against the Yankees. He delivered a stellar performance, needing only 107 pitches to secure his second shutout of the postseason. Beckett's final out, tagging out Jorge Posada, silenced the Yankee Stadium crowd and became the only shutout to clinch a World Series since 1991. His exceptional statistics, including bWAR, ERA, wins, WHIP, K/9, strikeouts, shutouts, ERA+, and FIP, place him among the top 10 in franchise history.
Dontrelle Willis, acquired in a trade with the Cubs in March 2002, brought a unique flair to the Marlins. His quirky delivery and sideways cap captivated fans, and he quickly became a fan favorite. In the 2003 season, Willis, then 21, made the National League All-Star team and was named NL Rookie of the Year, boasting a 14-6 record and a 3.30 ERA in 27 starts. Two years later, he achieved a remarkable single-season pitching performance, leading the Majors in wins, complete games, and shutouts while finishing second in the NL Cy Young voting. Willis' achievements, including his bWAR, ERA, wins, innings, strikeouts, starts, complete games, shutouts, ERA+, and FIP, further solidify his place in Marlins history.
Both Beckett and Willis will be honored during the 2026 season with pregame ceremonies and will have their plaques featured in the Marlins Museum, located on the Legends Level (fifth floor) behind home plate. This recognition is a testament to their enduring impact on the Marlins organization and the baseball world, leaving an indelible mark on the sport's history.
