China's Chery is making a bold move, launching its FOURTH brand in the UK! Get ready for Lepas, a name that evokes speed and a hint of the wild. But what exactly is this new contender, and how will it shake up the UK car scene?
Chery, the Chinese automotive giant, isn't playing around. They've already introduced Omoda, Jaecoo, and the Chery brand itself to the UK market within the last two years. Now, they're adding Lepas to the mix, with plans to roll out its vehicles later this year. This latest venture is specifically crafted with the European consumer in mind, and its name is quite intriguing – a clever blend of 'leopard,' 'leap,' and 'passion.'
Lepas is set to focus on 'new energy vehicles,' which is the Chinese term for what we commonly know as plug-in hybrids and fully electric cars. While the brand has kept details about its first UK offering under wraps for now, Autocar has previously hinted that we can expect to see L4 and L6 crossovers. These models are expected to be available with a choice of powertrains: traditional combustion engines, plug-in hybrid systems, and all-electric configurations. Interestingly, these new vehicles will share the same adaptable T1X modular platform that underpins the Omoda 5, Jaecoo 5, and Jaecoo 7.
When it comes to design, the Lepas crossovers are said to feature soft-edged aesthetics, drawing inspiration from Chery's existing Tiggo models and even established European brands like Audi.
But here's where it gets interesting... Chery's leadership is well aware of the potential for its own brands to compete with each other. At a previous Lepas launch event, the company's president, Zhang Guibing, even presented a slide asking, 'Too many brands?' While Jaecoo and Omoda boast distinct design languages, the initial Lepas models share a notable resemblance to the Chery Tiggos. To address this, Chery plans to give the Tiggo models a more robust, family-oriented look, while Omoda will embrace a more aggressive, angular styling for its upcoming 3 crossover.
And this is the part most people miss... Zhang Guibing explained the strategy behind this multi-brand approach: 'By offering different brands on the same platform, the volume is very big and that gives us a good price.' This means Chery can leverage economies of scale to offer competitive pricing across its diverse range.
This strategic expansion with a fourth brand underscores Chery's serious ambition to become a dominant force in the UK market. Last year, Omoda, Jaecoo, and Chery collectively captured 2.65% of the UK's new car sales. This impressive figure places them ahead of well-known brands like Mini (2.34%) and Tesla (2.25%), and even ahead of fellow Chinese manufacturer BYD (2.54%). With the arrival of Lepas and the ongoing growth of its other marques, Chery is positioning itself to challenge the market share of giants like Renault (3.24%), Skoda (4.12%), and Kia (5.62%).
What do you think about Chery's aggressive expansion strategy in the UK? Do you believe having multiple brands on the same platform is a smart move for competitive pricing, or could it lead to confusion for consumers? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
