Prepare to be inspired by a hotel that defies the ordinary! Rachael Gowdridge, an interior design master, has breathed new life into a 19th-century gem in Berlin, creating The Dean hotel - a space that's anything but generic.
Gowdridge's design philosophy? Embrace the building's history, add a dash of surprise, and let the architecture guide the way. She transformed the former residential building in Charlottenburg into a layered, eclectic haven, where bold colors and unique details create an atmosphere that's both intriguing and inviting.
"It's not about making a statement; it's about creating moments that make you pause and reflect," Gowdridge explains. "We wanted to challenge the typical hotel experience, to create spaces that reveal themselves gradually, rewarding those who pay attention."
The result? A hotel that balances raw, original surfaces with contemporary interventions, like expressive joinery and crisp thresholds. Each design decision was made on-site, allowing the building's character to shine through.
"The Dean gave us the freedom to experiment and respond instinctively," Gowdridge adds. "It was a chance to let the building lead and create something truly special."
The color palette is a masterpiece in itself, drawing inspiration from Berlin's architecture. Bold, saturated tones blend with soft neutrals, creating a warm and welcoming ambiance. From the deep-red vestibule to the guestrooms' bold entrances, color is used to define and enhance the spaces.
Public areas are designed as social hubs, with a bakery, restaurant, and lounge offering a vibrant, accessible space throughout the day. An intimate library, featuring a vintage Italian sofa and eclectic design books, provides a cozy retreat.
The 81 guest rooms are a study in contrast, responding to the building's narrow proportions with a mix of unexpected materials and contrasting details. Wood-floored vestibules lead to carpeted rooms with original wall paneling in soft mauve. Layered textiles and bespoke furniture, like simple plywood desks, add warmth and functionality.
Crafted details, like veneered bedside lamps and Bauhaus-inspired headboards, showcase the attention to detail. Bespoke ceiling lights made from latex offer a playful twist, a nod to Berlin's vibrant nightlife.
"At its heart, The Dean Berlin celebrates the tension between history and modernity, elegance and rebellion, refinement and rawness," Gowdridge says. "Every surface and object tells a story, a dialogue between the past and the present."
The Dean's Berlin outpost joins its siblings in Dublin, Cork, and Galway, with new locations in Munich and Miami on the horizon. Berlin's hotel scene is known for its eclectic interiors, and The Dean certainly holds its own alongside gems like The Hoxton Charlottenburg and Hotel Bikini Berlin.
So, what do you think? Is this a hotel experience you'd embrace? Do you agree that it's the little details and contrasts that make a space truly special? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
